E-invoicing steps

Here are the steps for sending an electronic invoice in Greece:

  1. The supplier or contractor prepares e-invoice data and transmits it to an e-invoicing service provider.

  2. The e-invoicing service provider validates the invoice data, reports it, and registers the e-invoice in the "myDATA" application for taxation purposes.

  3. The e-invoicing service provider prepares the e-invoice based on the European standard, national specification, and Peppol Business Interoperability Specification.

  4. The e-invoicing service provider submits the e-invoice to the Interoperability Center through the Peppol network.

  5. The Interoperability Center receives and validates the e-invoice according to European and national e-invoicing rules.

  6. The Interoperability Center routes the e-invoice to the relevant contracting authority or competent IT system of the public body.

  7. Competent contracting authorities and financial services handle the invoice according to their internal procedures using IT systems or web applications.

  8. Competent authorities send a notification regarding the processing of the e-invoice through the Interoperability Center and e-invoicing service providers back to the supplier or contractor.

myDATA portal

My Digital Accounting and Tax Application (myDATA) is a platform that has been developed by the Greek Tax Authority (GAVOIK) for e-invoicing in Greece.

The web app serves as a central repository for all e-invoices, providing a secure and standardized method for companies to send, receive, and manage e-invoices.

Digital reporting requirements in Greece

Greece has implemented hardware fiscalization since 1988, with the AADE’s latest updates to the system coming in 2020. Businesses must use a fiscal device that is capable of sending data to the My Digital Accounting and Tax Application, or in short, the myDATA tax portal, in real-time. The latest legal amendment states that receipts must include a QR code to improve the process.

Starting on 1 January 2024 entities must also declare information such as revenue documents, expense documents, and accounting records on the myDATA portal, which they are already familiar with.

Benefits of the e-invoicing mandate

The B2G e-invoicing mandate brings advantages to both the government and Greek businesses. Adopting e-invoicing allows the Greek authorities to simplify administrative procedures, minimize paperwork, and enhance efficiency in public procurement processes.

For businesses, transitioning to electronic invoicing results in faster and more accurate invoice submission and processing. The standardized framework ensures uniform invoicing practices, facilitating smoother transactions between suppliers and the government.

Peppol Network

Greece is yet another country that utilizes the Peppol network in order to simplify cross-border transactions through the universal format of Peppol BIS 3.0. Belgium, Denmark, and Germany have benefited from using Peppol Access Points such as DDD Invoices to facilitate the e-invoice transfer.
